In this book, I share my personal story with you and my discoveries about what our bodies, our “selves,” and our relationships need in order to heal from the wounds of life, especially those we sustain in childhood. I wouldn’t wish my beginnings on anyone. There was only one possible way for me to survive the brutality I endured and that was to shut myself down. Essentially, I was incapable of feeling. I was numb. Yes, my story is extreme, but it required me to leave no stone unturned to discover how to restore my humanity. I wanted to be able to really enjoy a long-term intimate sexual relationship with one person, to be able to tune into another’s emotional experience and empathize, to feel good and free in my body and spirit, to stand before groups and speak without fear, to age with vitality and grace, to look forward to adventures. I acquired all of these abilities during adulthood. As a young man embarking upon adulthood, I would have received an F in those subjects.

Healing the Wounds of Childhood A psychologist journey and discoveries from wretched beginnings to a thriving life edition by Don St John Health Fitness Dieting eBooks

This is not an easy read in some ways. It's a serious book about serious problems, and especially in the beginning, when he talks about the physical results of emotional trauma, how the body responds, and how that can increase the damage done to the whole person, it might get a little deep for the lay reader. If you do read through it, it's fascinating information, and even for someone who's been a nurse all her life and familiar with the body and its responses, there was a lot of new information. The second half of the book describes the different types of therapy and bodywork the writer has explored. He goes quite deeply into the different premises and processes, and how they work on the body and mind. It was especially interesting learning about types of therapy I'd heard about, but never understood how they worked. His main focus is on opening ourselves to our feelings and reactions, being aware of our body and how it is reacting, and especially being open to love both from ourselves and others. I think it's a great book for those who are interested in learning how to recognise and control the body's reaction to different feelings, and how to feel the feelings clearly and fearlessly.

Healing the Wounds of Childhood A psychologist journey and discoveries from wretched beginnings to a thriving life edition by Don St John Health Fitness Dieting eBooks Reviews

I liked the way Dr St John weaved together his journey, his learnings as a man and as a therapist, writings of of other leaders in the fields of psychotherapy with the many areas of neuroscience research. For me, it made the book more approachable and compelling.
I am not very familiar with Rolfing and Hellerwork and it was helpful to have a brief overview of their work and others who teach Structural Integration. Thank you for introducing me to lots of new information in areas I do not know.
I both found his writing about ‘Quality of Tissues, Structure and Movement’ very new and interesting for me. I was not familiar with Mae-wan Ho, and will read more when I get a chance.
Don St. John, Ph.D. has created an accessible exploration of healing trauma, beginning with his own personal story that inspires, teaches, and synthesizes into a coherent picture many kinds of contradictory experiences and knowledge bases that culminates in a profound holistic mind-body-brain-heart-spirit pathway to embracing the lovability of ourselves and others in authentic relationship. Included are many resources for healing mind, brain, heart, and body viewed as holistically integrated. I recommend this book both to my psychotherapy patients and to my bodywork clients.
Judith Pickles, Ph.D., Psy.D., CMP, Hellerwork Structural Integration trainee.
This book is a gift of love. Don's work is expressed in the language braid of love, art and science. I will re-read this book many times, as I believe that there is great truth behind all of it. It will engender HOPE to many. The book will make great gifts to my friends and family!

Thank you, Don!
Don St. John's book, "Healing the Wounds of Childhood," is actually a number of books packaged into one!
First, there is his own biography crafted in such a way that it might be part of our own story and the stories of Humanity in general.
Then, he creates a manual that shows the importance of love and connection in our lives. He provides specific practices designed to enrich our lives and connections. These practices function as a "handbook for healing." Throughout all of this is a textbook, providing information on the heart, the brain, the nervous system the structure of the body and how they function to provide optimum conditions for a thriving human. This book is a well crafted, interesting story of how humans "work" and what they need to thrive. I give it 5 stars and highly recommend it!
Incredible book by an incredible author. Despite having no childhood traumas like Don St. John describes, I have found this book extremely valuable in understanding myself and others with increased clarity. The writing style is personable and easy to read. I especially enjoyed how the author includes descriptions about the resources he used, found valuable and why. He gives the reader a great introduction and then allows the reader to investiage the resources further if the resources resonate with them. In this way, he respects and empowers the reader. My life has definitely been enriched by reading this book and its pages will continue to be a place I can come back to for comfort and inspiration.
Sometimes you come across a book that is hard to get through, but that isn’t because the subject matter isn’t interesting, but because it resonates so hard that it is physically difficult to turn the page and encounter even more revelations about the self. Healing the Wounds of Childhood taught me so much about myself, and despite the process being hard, it has been such a valuable experience, and one I’m entirely thankful for. The author has my gratitude and respect for writing this book. I know I will go back and read it again, and perhaps next time I’ll encounter further recollections and discover more about myself than the first time.
